Scottish Wildcats Need Your Help!
09-Jun-2009
The Scottish wildcat is in deep trouble.
Threatened by hybridisation with domestic cats, some experts believe there could be as few as 400 pure-bred wildcats left in Scotland, making this iconic feline even rarer than the Bengal tiger and heading for the unthinkable – extinction!
Wild Scotland and its members are supporting the Highland Tiger campaign. The project was launched on 5th May
2009 by the Scottish Environment Minister Roseanna Cunningham MSP and aims to raise awareness of the plight of the wildcat and to
safeguard its future in Scotland through practical
conservation and research.
Highland Tiger aims to help the wildcats through practical conservation
and research, develop educational materials to improve awareness of
wildcats and expand captive breeding facilities to support the wild
population.
Wild Scotland is supporting this initiative. Our contribution will go towards developing educational materials for local children in order to raise awareness of the species. Without a better general understanding in Scotland, conservation efforts will struggle so this is an important element of the initiative.
We need your help to spread the word that wildcats are worth
saving. We need people to know as much about wildcats as they do about
David Beckham or Madonna! Wildcats need people to care. So tell your
family, friends and workmates – in fact anyone that will listen!
To help promote the campaign, sets of 5 Highland Tiger postcards are available. The packs are available free of charge, although a donation towards the project would be very welcome.
