Scottish Seabird Centre Hatching New Plans

With anecdotal evidence of a decline of lobster catch in parts of Forth lobster fisheries, the award-winning Scottish Seabird Centre at North Berwick is in initial discussions with partners for a joint venture to establish a lobster hatchery in the area.

The establishment of a lobster hatchery at North Berwick harbour would allow local fishermen to sell hen lobsters to the hatchery, where the eggs would hatch, allowing the juveniles to grow and improve their survival chances when they are returned to the sea.

The lobster population would be increased, leading to its long term sustainability. The Centre would be open to visitors and would also be used for scientific research and education. Most importantly, it would help create sustainable lobster fishing in the Forth and benefit struggling fishing communities throughout Fife and East Lothian.
