Watching Ospreys on Rothiemurchus Estate
The return of the magnificent fish-eating osprey from Africa to Scotland each summer is the highlight of many bird lover’s calendar. Ospreys have been found on the Highland estate of Rothiemurchus near Aviemore in the Cairngorms National Park for many, many years and the estate has two excellent osprey watching opportunities available to visitors, whether you have a long camera lens or not!
Of course seeing an osprey, or any wild animal, can never be guaranteed however by visiting a recognised site you’ll be maximising your chances.
A purpose built photography hide on a purpose built osprey pond at the Rothiemurchus Fishery is an excellent place to get spectacular shots of ospreys fishing at close quarters.
The hides are situated right on the water edge and no matter where an osprey dives it will be in view of the camera lens. The pond is stocked with fish that are the correct size for ospreys, providing an even stronger lure for them when they fly over our ponds.
This is a fully guided session where a Rothiemurchus guide will be in radio contact with photographers in the hides informing them of what is going on above them and helping to describe when and where the osprey will go down (restricted view in the hides).
Cost: £135 for one session or £215 for two consecutive sessions during the peak season (June – August) and £80 per session during April and May. Evening photography on demand for £100 (5pm-8.30pm roughly).
Timings: time of year dependant but roughly 4.30am -9.30am (guide will phone in advance to speak to each client).
