Forth Ferry embarks on maiden voyage

The Wharton family, from Whitekirk, were the first passengers on board the Forth Ferry today (Friday 7 August). Laird (age 7) and Radleigh (age 5) were welcomed by Seafari Managing Director, Colin Aston, and the Scottish Seabird Centre’s Tammie the Puffin for the maiden voyage.

The Forth Ferry has been launched by Seafari Adventures and the Scottish Seabird Centre to forge closer tourism and community links between East Lothian and Fife.

The Forth Ferry enables locals and visitors to venture between the two stunning seaside towns of North Berwick, East Lothian, and Anstruther, Fife, in approximately 45 minutes rather than the usual two-hour drive time. Day return tickets are available priced at £25 per adult, £15 per child (age 4 to 16/ 3 and under free) and £20 per concession (age 60+).

This new excursion has roots in a long and rich history, with boat trips between North Berwick and Fife dating back to at least 950AD. The ‘Pilgrims’ Ferry’ transported religious worshipers across the Forth to visit the relics of Scotland’s patron saint at St Andrews. At its height, some 10,000 pilgrims made the crossing every year.

Now the journey on offer is quite a different experience with passengers able to travel on the custom-built, 55-seat, Seafari Explorer which was launched by Seafari Adventures and the Scottish Seabird Centre in March 2013.
