Common seal nostrils slant down in a 'v' shape which almost touch at the bottom, while grey seal nostrils are nearly parallel slits. Females give birth to a single pup in midsummer. Pups are able to swim within hours of birth. Mating takes place in July. Also known as the harbour seal.
