John Sergeant Makes Waves on the Caledonian Canal!

Caledonian Discovery

Caledonian Discovery

ITV’s new “Barging Round Britain with John Sergeant” is an eight-part series which follows
John on his journey exploring eight of our greatest canal journeys. This weeks’ episode (on Friday 6th March), sees him travelling through his personal favourite – The Caledonian Canal which takes him from Inverness to Fort William cutting through the Scottish Highlands and The Great Glen.

On this magnificent coast to coast voyage, TV celebrity and former BBC Reporter, John, enjoys gorgeous scenery, discovers myths and legends and uncovers extraordinary stories as he goes. John describes it as “The most exciting canal programme you’ll ever see.”

Martin Balcombe, owner of Caledonian Discovery Cruises which offers “soft adventure”  cruises through the Caledonian Canal and the Great Glen said “I am delighted that John thinks of The Caledonian Canal as his favourite. We agree 100%! The journey is spectacular and the scenery is second to none. Our guests have an amazing time as there is just so much to take in along the way. I can’t wait to see the programme and I hope it means that more people will be keen to make the journey for themselves!”

Caledonian Discovery Cruises are available from April to October and enable guests to enjoy a unique 78 mile journey from coast to coast through the Caledonian Canal and the Great Glen. With various options to “Boot, Bike or Boat” (or all three) during a week long journey there is something for everyone and no packing and unpacking as your home (a twelve berth barge with underfloor heating and en-suite cabins ) travels with you!

What better way to discover the wonderful Caledonian Canal, Great Glen and legendary Loch Ness than on an all-inclusive active break, staying aboard one of Caledonian Discovery’s stunning staffed barges.

When asked why he thought that barging was so popular in the UK John Sergeant said “There’s a real element of mystery and adventure, and people like a mystery. There is also
companionship with the people you are with and your holiday home travels with you.”

You will experience all this and more on a Caledonian Discovery Cruise. Guests have the option of enjoying an adventurous day of cycling or walking the Great Glen, or perhaps canoeing on Loch Ness. They could also experience the very best of Scottish wildlife up close, or just relax and enjoy the spectacular world pass by in the companionship of new found friends. At the end of the day everyone gets together for a home-cooked meal onboard using only the freshest ingredients, sharing stories of their adventures and making plans for the following day. Drinks are also available on board. All activity instruction is provided by the friendly, dedicated crew.

As well as week-long cruises Caledonian Discovery operate a number of mini-cruises which are popular with those whose time is limited. They are taking bookings for 2015 and 2016 for the entire range of four and seven day activity cruises costing from £425 to £935 per person, all-inclusive.
