One week to go!  Your last chance to complete Marine Scotland’s national survey of coastal and marine recreation and tourism – and win prizes

What marine or coastal recreation activities have you undertaken in the past 12 months? Where have you undertaken these activities?

These are just some of the questions Marine Scotland is seeking to answer with its national survey of coastal and marine recreation and tourism.  Time is running out to take part as the survey closes on Saturday 31st October 2015.

Sarah Brown, Project Manager, said: “Thousands of people have already completed the survey but we want to hear from more of you – whether you enjoy popular activities such as canoeing, kayaking or sailing, or more niche activities like land yachting, wind surfing, or SCUBA diving”.

If you haven’t completed the survey already, this is the time to tell us where you think the most important places are to undertake your favourite marine and coastal recreation activities around Scotland.  The data gathered during this survey will provide us with a better understanding of the importance of different areas and will create the evidence base for the forthcoming Regional Marine Plans.  This information will help ensure that tourism and recreation are appropriately recognised in the planning process, providing the kind of information held for other activities like shipping, off-shore renewables and fish farming.

We need as many people as possible to complete the survey, so feel free to send a link to your friends and colleagues, ‘like’ our Facebook page or follow us on Twitter.  The survey may be completed online at:  The survey includes interactive maps and works best on laptop/desktop computers, rather than tablets or smartphones.

We also have a separate survey for businesses involved in marine recreation and tourism.  This survey is targeted at anyone who relies on the marine environment for their business – from a bed and breakfast owner in a coastal town to a tour operator.  Currently, more than 250 business surveys have been completed.  This survey can be accessed by clicking here

Everyone who completes the survey of marine recreation and tourism activity will have the opportunity to enter a free prize draw with prizes that include:

  • A short break in one of Scottish Canals’ holiday cottages
  • Spa Day Experience for two guests at Portavadie’s new Spa
  • Family tickets for Inveraray Jail and Inveraray Castle
  • Two Return Tickets for the Kintyre Express fast passenger ferry from Campbeltown to Ballycastle in Northern Ireland

The survey, run by consultancy LUC, is a partnership between Marine Scotland, Firth of Clyde Forum, Scottish Coastal Forum, The Crown Estate, Visit Scotland, sportscotland, WHAM, Royal Yachting Association, British Marine (Scotland), Sail Scotland and Scottish Canals.
