Blackstone Clydesdales WIN Scotland’s Best Day Out at Scottish Entertainment and Hospitality Awards

”We are super excited to be the WINNER in our category of the Scotland’s best family day out at the Scottish entertainment and hospitality awards gala in Glasgow on Sunday 7th May. A fantastic achievement for us being a small independent family business in East Ayrshire, showcasing our rare breed Clydesdale Horses.

With the public votes being cast to get us to the final, then the secret shopper visits resulted in us being a Winner. One week on after celebrating…. and back to old clothes and porridge, I must say it is a fantastic result for our family farm, our voluntary team and not forgetting the stars of the farm, our four legged family members. It is clear from our guests feedback, our reviews, our hard working team at the farm and winning this award that we have something special in East Ayrshire, Scotland”

A little more about Blackstone Clydesdales & DIG-a-Day Experience at Blackstone Farm

Blackstone Farm offers a unique range of hands-on, fun filled farm activities, one of the few in Scotland that provide experiences of this kind. Our guided Heavy Horse Riding and Digger experience cater to all ages and abilities, as we don’t believe it is about fitting in!

Blackstone is a working Highland Beef Farm, which has been our family home since 1930’s; John, I with our children Andrew and Maureen moved back to the farm in 2000, when Johns Dad and Mum retired. We now farm a small select breeding herd of Campion Clydesdale Horses and Highland Coos, farm pets such as Alpacas, Boars, Sheep, Hens, Geese, Ducks, Dogs, our cheeky Donkeys Henrietta and Bubbles and not forgetting our fleet of Diggers which have been part of the farms income since the late 1960’s which we think makes us a fascinating, non-conventional family attraction.

Our aim at the farm is to create and share our passion and knowledge of our Rare breed Clydesdale Horses and farm animals with our visiting guests. Giving them the chance to experience the magic of our Heavy Horses, our impressive highland coos; learn first hand about their lives while meeting these rare breed animals up close and personal.

Our DIG-a-Day experience with the excavators is a relatively new venture for the farm, was born from our visiting guests suggestion and through our imagination has grown into an integral part of the farm experience. The experience is tailored to our guests’ specific needs and abilities and we pride ourselves in our personal service, creating a unforgettable moment in time “a keepsake memory”

The farm experience evolved in 2011 from securing a way to care for our growing four-legged family. The Clydesdale is a beautiful rare breed native to Scotland and it is our belief that these horses still play an important role in our society t21281422012_63e1ca2f2d_ooday. On each visit we aim to educate on the Clydesdales breed history. They have over time lost their purpose in agriculture giving way to industrialisation. We aim to give our guests a rare opportunity to experience the Clydesdale as they once were working on the land, and today in their more modern capacity of being ridden and driven in harness at the farm.

The Clydesdales Heavy Horses are very special animals, too many in the equine world as well as us. The iconic images of the working horse are etched in the minds of our older generations. At the farm we would take our older generation a trip down memory lane but also give our younger generation an incite of what the Clydesdale brings to the twenty-first century. Blackstone is not only a facility that plays a part of giving a fun family day out but providing our guests with an education of our past and would love for it to grow in the future.

Our personal booking service at Blackstone encourage guests to use their time and try their hand at various activities, from Clydesdales working the land with the harrows, carriage driving, scenic beach rides or a trek on horse back letting you discover our breath-taking East Ayrshire scenery, through woodland walks and the picturesque Dumfries House Estate. With DIG-a-Day they get hands on with real excavators, this is their chance to get to grips with and operation of our heavy plant machinery.

We could not do all that we do without the help of our incredible volunteers!, Each and every volunteer that comes our way is a valuable gift to us and our farm, we truly appreciate all of the hard work and effort that volunteers give to us freely on a daily basis.

As of today [May 2017] we have 26 Clydesdales in resident at there forever home on the farm form 3 weeks to 23 years old

We not only provide a selection of experiences, we also work with local communities, councils and organizations at events and fairs. This helps us gain recognition for the Clydesdale Horse and in turn assists towards improving the welfare of our four-legged Blackstone family members.

John and my passion for our rare breed Clydesdale Family is second to none. Being recognised and awarded for our customer service means a great deal to us as we pride ourselves on delivering a first class, personal experience to all of our guests. Our voluntary team at Blackstone are an invaluable and passionate bunch, and without them we would not be here today.
